"My barn having burned down, I can now see the moon." ~ Mizuta Masahide (17th century Japanese Samurai)
Constant disruptions due to Black Swan events or Perfect storms are becoming the norm.
Since these are almost impossible to avoid, during the planning phase for DR & BCP (Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity Planning), we should put a strong focus on the recovery piece. Specifically, we need to know how fast our organization can recover and bounce back. That will determine, how resilient our organization is.
To develop this resilience, an organization should implement strategies and practices that enable it to withstand and recover rapidly from disruptions. Five ways to build resilience:are as follow:
1. Identify and assess risks
This includes (a) external risks (such as market changes, natural disasters, and technological disruptions) and, (b) internal risks (such as operational inefficiencies and employee turnover).
By understanding the potential impacts of these risks, an organization can take steps to mitigate them, prepare for potential disruptions and gear up rapid recovery.
2. Develop contingency plans
An organization should have contingency plans in place to guide its response to disruptions. These plans should outline the actions the organization will take to (a) protect its assets, (b) maintain critical operations, and, (c) recover from disruptions rapidly.
3. Build flexible systems and processes
To be resilient, an organization should have systems and processes that are flexible and adaptable, which may involve
(a) investing in digital technologies that enable remote work and collaboration (b) implementing agile processes that allow for rapid response to disruptive incidents or events.
4. Cultivate a culture of resilience
An organization's culture plays a critical role in its resilience. By fostering a culture of collaboration, transparency, and continuous improvement, an organization can build the collective resilience of its employees and improve its ability to respond to disruptions.
5. Enhance communication and coordination
Clear and effective communication and coordination are essential for building resilience. An organization should have systems in place to ensure that employees are informed and connected, and that key stakeholders are fully involved in the decision-making and recovery efforts.
By implementing these strategies, an organization can build resilience and be better prepared to withstand and recover faster from disruptions.
